How to know your business is ready to scale spend.
Pouring budget into a leaky funnel just buys expensive lessons. The readiness checks to run before you touch the budget dial.
There is a seductive logic to scaling ad spend: if a pound in returns more than a pound out, spend more pounds. It works right up until it does not. Pour budget into a funnel that leaks, and all you buy is expensive proof that it leaks.
Before you touch the budget dial, a handful of readiness checks separate the businesses that will compound from the ones about to light money on fire.
Your unit economics have to survive daylight
The first question is unglamorous: does each customer make you money, accounting for everything? Not blended averages, not best-case cohorts, honest numbers with the cost of delivery, support and churn baked in. If the economics only work when you squint, more volume magnifies the loss.
- You know your true cost to acquire a customer, by channel.
- You know what a customer is worth over their lifetime, conservatively.
- The gap between the two is comfortable, not marginal.
The funnel converts before you feed it
Spending more sends more people to the same pages. If those pages already convert poorly, you have simply chosen to fail at a larger scale. Fix the leaks first, the message, the landing experience, the follow-up, so every extra pound of traffic lands somewhere that can hold it.
Scaling spend does not fix a broken funnel. It just makes the hole bigger and the bill larger.
You can measure what the money does
If you cannot attribute results with reasonable confidence, scaling is flying blind. You need tracking you trust, a clear read on which channels drive real pipeline, and the discipline to kill what does not work quickly.
The operation can absorb the growth
More leads mean more calls, more delivery, more support. Growth that outruns the business behind it turns new customers into bad reviews. Readiness is as much about operations as it is about marketing.
Run these checks honestly. If they pass, scaling is one of the highest-return moves you can make. If they do not, the fastest path to growth is fixing them first, not spending through them.
